5 DIY Rustic Shelves Anyone Can Make

Shelves of any styles, sizes and shapes are of great use, not only at homes but even in other places like schools, workplaces, etc. The usual and easy rectangular shape makes it ideal to be a product of our creativity, not to mention, its use. Here’s a list of easy to make shelves that you’ll surely want to try.


1. Floating Rustic Shelf

Materials:

  • 2×6 8ft pine wood
  • Drywall Anchors
  • Stain
  • Paintbrush
  • Level
  • Masking Tape
  • Corner Braces

Procedures:

  • Begin by tracing the location of your shelf on the wall. You can use the masking tape to mark it. You may also mark where you will position the batten as well as the spaces for each shelf.
  • Cut the 2×6” 8ft length wood in the middle. That will make 2 shelves. You can add more based on your preference.
  • Sand the edges down and stain it with your preferred color. Dry them completely.
  • Mount the brackets on the walls where you marked using the anchors. Use the level to ensure symmetry.
  • Attach the shelves on the brackets using the same process.
  • Depending on how sturdy your shelves are, you may put your things on them.

2. Hanging Rustic Shelf

Materials:

  • Wooden Boards
  • Rope cord
  • Metal rings
  • Scissors
  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Hooks

Procedure:

  • Cut the boards based on your desired size. Drill two holes on opposite ends. Measure the distances to make sure they’re even. These holes are where you will attach the cords. Smoothen the board and stain them to look rustic.
  • Get the metal rings and cut a cord to your preferred length. Use 2 pieces of cords for each shelf.
  • Fold the 2 pieces of cord in half, and attached the folded end to the metal ring by creating a knot.
  • Separate the strands, 2 on the left and 2 on the right. Pull each strand through the holes in the shelf. Tie knots at the end of each cord. This knot will secure the shelf. Cut the excess cord.
  • Attach the metal rings on the wall using screws or hooks. Fill your shelves.

3. Honeycomb Rustic Wall Shelf

Materials:

  • 6 feet long 1×4 wood
  • Miter saw or table saw
  • Wood glue
  • Screws
  • Drill
  • Sandpaper
  • Mounting Brackets (Sawtooth Hanger)

Procedure:

  • Start by working on the hexagon. Cut 6 pieces of 7” wood with 30° angle cut. The cuts should be inward in both sides. You can do it by setting the miter saw to 30°. Prepare more woods depending on how many hexagons you want to make.
  • Attach the pieces using screws. Don’t forget to pre-drill the holes to prevent the wood from splitting.
  • Work on the hexagon in halves. Attach each piece using glue and screw one at a time.
  • After working on the halves, put start putting them together. Make sure that the halves perfectly fit. If it doesn’t, you can sand the side for adjustments.
  • Smoothen all the edges with a sandpaper. Paint it to achieve that rustic look. You can fill the holes with sawdust using the glue.
  • Install the mounting brackets on the hexagons and arrange your hexagons to look like a big honeycomb.

4. Recycled Wood Crates Rustic Shelf

Materials:

  • 6-8 crates of the same size
  • 2 1×3” pine boards
  • 2 1×2” pine boards
  • 1 1×4” pine board
  • Pocket-hole jig and drill bit
  • Drill
  • 1 ¼” wood screws
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil

Procedure:

  • Measure the length and height of your crates. This is for you to decide the height and width of your shelf. Once you have decided your shelf’s configuration, start working on the frame using the pine boards. Drill pocket holes and attach the boards with screws.
  • Arrange the crates based on your preferences. If you made a rectangular frame, pile the crate to fit them in it.
  • Position the frame at the backside of the crates. Secure the crates to the frame using the wood screws. Make sure that all crates are attached.
  • Sand the sides which need to be smoothen. Stain your shelf. Once it is dry completely, you may position it anywhere in your home and start filling it with your things.

5. Recycled Wine Boxes Floating Rustic Shelf

Materials:

  • 3 pieces wine boxes
  • Drill
  • Wall Anchors
  • Screws
  • Sandpaper
  • Stain

Procedure:

  • Start by cleaning the boxes if needed. Sand them as well to have a smoother surface. After that, stain them for a better rustic look and dry them completely.
  • Decide where you want to mount your shelf and mark them so it installing will be easier. You can also decide the pattern, whether you want them installed vertically or horizontally.
  • Mount the boxes on the wall using the drill and wall anchors. Make sure to secure them well.
  • Fill them in with your stuff.
