5 DIY Rustic Farmhouse Picture Frame Ideas

Memories are forever. And often, memories can be kept through photos. These photos are the only tangible proofs of those wonderful moments so it’s best to keep them personal and artistic. Below are some picture frame ideas that you can make on your own to keep your memories more special.

1. Simple Rustic Picture Frame with Burlap

  • Wood from old fences (for a rustic look)
  • Burlap
  • Wood glue
  • Staple gun and staples
  • Colored cardstock

Steps:

  • Start by preparing the picture that you’d mount in the frame. Paste in on a cardstock with a tape and trim the edges.
  • Next, prepare to cut the wood based on the size of the picture. For 8×10 photo, you may cut the wood to 19” long. For the width, 12” is enough. You may achieve this by placing the woods next to each other. Cut two thin pieces of 12 ½” long wood.
  • Lay the 19” woods on the table, then lay the 12” wood across them on each side. The space in the middle should be enough for the photo. Paste the woods together using wood glue.
  • Cut the burlap a little bigger than the photo. Create a fray on each side by pulling some strands.
  • Attach the burlap on the frame with a stapler. Mount the picture on the burlap using a glue. Hang your frame.

2. Rustic Farmhouse Picture Frame from Old Books

Materials:

  • Old books
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Craft knife
  • Straightedge
  • Cutting mat
  • Glue

Steps:

  • Mark an opening on the front cover using a ruler and a pencil. Put a cutting mat under the cover and cut the drawn lines.
  • On the first page, mark an opening slightly smaller than the cut on the cover and cut it. Do the same process on the next pages until you get the size of the photo that you would use. The cuts should look like stairs.
  • Using glue, paste the front and back covers to the pages to secure them. Brush some glue on the back of the photo and paste it inside the book through the opening. If the book is colorful, you can paint it to look rustic.

3. Twigs Rustic Photo Frame

Materials:

  • 10 twigs (6” each)
  • 10 twigs (8” each)
  • 3 meters Twine
  • A pair of Scissors
  • Craft Knife
  • Glue
  • Baking Paper (transparent)
  • Spray Paint (Glitters)
  • Photo

Steps:

  • Prepare the twigs by cutting them on each end based on how big you want your frame to be (Length and width).
  • Create a layout for your frame using 5 twigs on each side. The longer twigs should be placed on the sides while the shorter twigs are on the top and the bottom part of your frame.
  • Get the twines and tie each end to a set of twigs. Wrap around the set of twigs many times to secure. Use the twine to wrap all sides to create a rectangular shape.
  • You may choose to leave the color as it is, or use the spray paint to decorate it. Dry it completely before continuing.
  • Using the glue, paste the photo to the baking paper and dry completely.
  • Attach the baking paper to the frame by gluing it on the sides. The photo should be facing out.
  • Use flowers to decorate it.. You can either hang it or put it on a shelf.

4. Wine Cork Rustic Picture Frame

Materials:

  • 7×10” board
  • 13-15 wine corks
  • Craft knife
  • Strong craft glue
  • Pencil
  • Spray paint
  • Sandpaper

Steps:

  • Smoothen all the sides of the board including the surface. Stain the board with dark brown or any rustic color of your choice. Let it dry.
  • Prepare by corks by cutting them vertically in the middle. You may also trim the edges to make corks of different sizes. Paint each cork with a different color or design them based on your preferences.
  • Once dry, glue the flat sides of the corks and attach them on the edges of the board following its shape. You may decide how you want to align corks. Let the glue dry completely.
  • Insert your photo in the frame. You may either hang it on the wall or create a stand and place it on your table.

5. Rustic Yarn Photo Frame

Materials:

  • Cardboard
  • Pen
  • Ruler
  • Craft knife or scissors
  • Glue gun
  • Yarn (colors of your choice)
  • Paint
  • Glitter

Steps:

  • Create a frame using the cardboard. Trace the photo on the cardboard to determine the size of the hole. Cut it. Trace another line 1 inch further from the first line, then cut it.
  • Trace the frame on a different cardboard and cut it on the sides leaving the middle part untouched.
  • Wrap the sides of the frame with yarns. You can use different colors on each side or alternately. Secure the yard with glue.
  • Paste the photo on the cardboard without a hole, then attach the board with yarn on it.
  • Glue the sides with wrapped with yarns and sprinkle some glitters.
  • Post the pictures on your walls.
